90 students and their teachers from 8 schools were privileged to be part of the first activity to be held in the new SAFC (South Australian Film Corporation) studios. They were participating in the interactive Nothing beats The Real Thing! Youth Challenge program which challenged them to think about the sort of society they want to live in, and to understand the implications of screen piracy upon that society.

They heard how young actor Lucas Pittaway was literally picked off the street to test for and gain a lead part in the movie Snowtown. Lucas is now off to the USA to screen test for more parts. South Australian Film Corporation CEO Richard Harris provided great insights into the impacts of screen piracy on the industry in general.

Students then demonstrated their own acting abilities, as well as the knowledge and understandings they had achieved during the day, about the issue of screen piracy and its implications not only for the film industry, but also for the type of society they want to live in.

All agreed that they were now much more aware of the issue and its consequences, and now bear the responsibility for the consequences of their actions. They agreed that as citizens of a digital society they had both rights and responsibilities, and that their actions would shape that society.

The program is sponsored by the Intellectual Property Awareness Foundation (IPAF).
